we have some plants that have been hacked off their roots, will they continue to grow in water bucket?

you have to get them to make roots so if you are using water you need to do a 45 degree cut. use a container that doesnt allow light in even cover the top. change water 1 time a week. if you have an air stone and air pump use it to add air into the water and it will help. if they was in flower they will have to reveg so I would make clones and start over with them. So how did they loose there roots?
