  • How to know when to trim and what to trim

I'm new at this and in the past I trimmed it back and no new growth. I need to know what and were to trim. And when it is best to trim.

Hi there Lucy. Not really sure as to what you are asking for here. What is the purpose of your trimming? What is it that you want to achieve? Are you talking about topping?

I've raised bonsai for a few yrs. I assume the same rules to trimming and topping pot are the same? Top 3rd set up top 3 sets later and so on. Won't this grow a squatty plant?

Topping will make a plat shorter and bushier. Every time you nip out the growing tip, 2 will form in its place. 1 becomes 2 - 2 become 4 etc. It also promotes more growth on lower branches as it interrupts the flow of growth restriction hormones from the growing tip.
Wait until the plant has at least 3 or 4 nodes. Simply snip off the growing tip directly above a node (the junction where the leaves come out). You will see two tiny shoots already present at the node. Topping causes these to grow into lead shoots.
It is explained in detail here.

Fox hound. You can do it in 3s like that. SOme people go for every other node, particularly if making a bonsai style mother plant for clones. Google bonsai cannabis mother and see what comes up.
